Short answer: if you use Amazon's Send to Kindle, you don't need to convert anything. It accepts EPUB files and converts them for your Kindle itself. Convert to AZW3 when you copy books onto a Kindle over a USB cable, because a Kindle can't open an EPUB copied that way. Choose MOBI only for an older Kindle that can't read AZW3.

Which format you need

  • Send to Kindle (email, app or web): keep the EPUB. Nothing to convert.
  • USB cable, any Kindle from 2012 on: AZW3. It keeps chapters, images and formatting best.
  • USB cable, an older Kindle: MOBI. Amazon's Send to Kindle no longer accepts MOBI, so use it only over USB.

What carries over

The book's chapters, table of contents, images and cover all come across, and the text still reflows, so font size and margins stay yours to choose on the Kindle. AZW3 keeps more of the original styling than MOBI, which is an older format with simpler layout. Pick your Kindle under Settings → Target device before converting and images are sized for its screen.

Steps for a USB transfer

  1. Drop your .epub file into the converter above. AZW3 is already chosen.
  2. Select Convert to AZW3 and download the file.
  3. Connect your Kindle with a USB cable. It appears as a drive on your computer.
  4. Copy the file into the Kindle's documents folder, then eject the Kindle. The book shows up in your library.

Frequently asked

Why can't I just copy the EPUB over?

Kindle e-readers don't open EPUB files copied over USB. Amazon converts EPUBs only when they arrive through Send to Kindle, so a USB transfer needs a format the Kindle reads natively, such as AZW3.

Can I convert a book I bought?

Only if it has no DRM. Books sold with copy protection can't be opened by any converter, this one included. DRM-free and public-domain EPUBs convert normally.

My book is a PDF, not an EPUB

Convert it to an EPUB first with the PDF to EPUB converter, then send the EPUB with Send to Kindle. The guide to PDF to EPUB for Kindle walks through it.
