A Calibre Alternative for PDF to EPUB, Without the Cleanup

Short answer: keep Calibre for your library and use Convert2EPUB for the PDF step. Calibre is excellent at managing, editing and sending ebooks, but a PDF imported into it often comes out as one long chapter with page numbers in the middle of sentences, and a scan comes out with no text at all. Convert2EPUB rebuilds the chapters, removes the page furniture and reads scans first, then hands you an EPUB you can add straight back into Calibre. Text PDFs are free, with no install and no account.

Why people look for a Calibre alternative for PDFs

A PDF records where each line sits on a printed page. It has no idea what a chapter, a paragraph or a footnote is. Calibre's own manual says PDF is one of the worst formats to convert from, and the results show it:

  • One long chapter. Unless the PDF has a good bookmark outline, there's no table of contents, and the book reads as a single scroll.
  • Page furniture in the text. Running heads, page numbers and watermarks turn up between sentences every page or so.
  • Broken paragraphs. Lines end where the printed page ended, so text breaks mid-sentence until you tune Calibre's line un-wrapping factor.
  • Settings to learn. Getting chapters back means heuristic processing options and XPath expressions under Structure detection, tried book by book.
  • No OCR. A scanned PDF has pictures of pages, not text. Calibre doesn't read them, so the EPUB comes out empty or as page images.

What Convert2EPUB does differently

The difference is the work done before the book is packaged. Each problem above has a step of its own:

  • Chapter headings are found from the PDF's own layout and fonts, and become a working table of contents.
  • Running heads, page numbers and watermarks are detected across pages and removed.
  • Lines are joined back into paragraphs, and footnotes stay clickable.
  • Figures stay beside their captions.
  • Every page is checked for scans. Scanned pages can be read with OCR in many languages, and a scan that was already OCR'd keeps its text.
  • Textbooks with formulas, tables and code can use Pro recognition, which rebuilds them instead of flattening them into images.

There are no settings to tune. Upload the PDF, check the quote, and download the EPUB.

When Calibre is still the better tool

For almost everything except PDF import. Calibre manages libraries of thousands of books, edits metadata and covers, syncs with e-readers, edits EPUB files directly, and converts between nearly every ebook format there is. If your source file is already an ebook, or a well-made Word document, Calibre may be all you need. Convert2EPUB doesn't try to replace any of that, and its finished books are packaged with Calibre's own engine.

How to use both

  1. Upload the PDF to the converter above. Turn on OCR if the quote says the PDF has scanned pages.
  2. Download the finished .epub.
  3. In Calibre, click Add books and choose the EPUB. To replace a poor conversion of a book you already have, select it and use Add files to selected book records instead.
  4. Edit metadata and send the book to your e-reader from Calibre as usual. For a Kindle, Calibre can make an AZW3, or use the free EPUB to Kindle converter.

Frequently asked

Is Convert2EPUB built on Calibre?

Partly. Calibre's conversion engine packages the finished book. Everything before that is Convert2EPUB's own: checking each page for scans, finding chapter headings, removing running headers, page numbers and watermarks, joining lines into paragraphs, and OCR.

Can I add the EPUB to my Calibre library?

Yes. The download is a standard EPUB. Add it to Calibre like any other book, or use Add files to selected book records to put it on a book you already have, then edit metadata and send it to your devices from Calibre as usual.

Does Convert2EPUB work offline like Calibre?

The website needs a connection, and uploaded files are deleted automatically. For offline conversion there is a desktop app, a one-time $13.49 purchase, that runs Standard conversion on your own computer.

Is it free like Calibre?

Text PDFs and Word, RTF, TXT, ODT and HTML files convert free with no account and no page limit. Scanned pages beyond the first 10, Pro recognition for formulas and tables, and translation are paid, because they take real processing time.

Can it convert EPUB to Kindle formats like Calibre?

Yes. An EPUB can be converted to AZW3 or MOBI for a Kindle, or to a PDF, free and with no account.

Try it on the PDF Calibre struggled with. Free for text PDFs, no account required.
