PDF to EPUB for Textbooks: Equations, Tables, and Pro Mode

A textbook PDF can contain selectable text and still make a poor ebook. The prose may extract cleanly, while equations break into separate symbols, table columns run together, or a figure becomes detached from its caption. That happens because a PDF stores the position of marks on a page; it does not reliably label each mark as a heading, equation, table cell, or paragraph.

The right conversion depends on what is inside the book. Standard works well for ordinary reading material. For technical pages with formulas, tables, code, and complicated reading order, Pro is designed to reconstruct more of the page before building a reflowable EPUB.

Why textbook PDFs need a closer look

A novel mostly asks a converter to put paragraphs in order and find the chapter headings. A textbook can ask it to interpret several structures on one page: a column of prose, a displayed equation, a numbered list of steps, a diagram, a caption, and a table with aligned rows and columns. Plain text extraction can find the words but lose the relationships between them.

For example, a fraction can be read as numerator, denominator, and nearby labels in the wrong sequence. A multi-column table can become a long list of values without the row headings that explain them. The text is technically present, but difficult to study from.

When Standard is enough

Choose Standard for novels, reports, and textbooks whose pages are mostly regular prose. It converts selectable text into a reflowable EPUB, detects headings for chapters and a table of contents, and cleans repeated page furniture such as running headers and footers. In the regular PDF flow, figures and equations can be kept with the text they belong beside.

If the book has only an occasional formula or diagram, try Standard first. If the result keeps the prose and chapter structure readable, there may be no reason to process every page with the technical recognition path.

What Pro does differently

Pro is built for textbooks and technical documents. It sends each page through a recognition service to reconstruct formulas, tables, code, images, and reading order, then packages the result so surrounding text can still reflow in the reader. It is available for PDF, DOCX, and ODT uploads.

For a PDF, Pro uses two credits per page because every page goes through recognition. It requires a signed-in account, and the quote shows the expected total before the conversion starts. Standard remains the free option for an ordinary text PDF.

Keep the page check in your workflow

Recognition can make a technical book much easier to read, but no automated conversion should be treated as a proofreader. Open a few representative pages in the finished EPUB and compare them with the PDF. Check a dense equation, a table with several columns, a code block, and a diagram with a caption. Look for missing symbols, shifted labels, or reading order that does not make sense.

The best pages to inspect are often the ones where the PDF puts multiple kinds of content close together. If the result is for coursework or reference, keep the source PDF nearby for any page where exact notation or layout matters.

Choose a layout that fits the material

Reflowable EPUB is useful when you want to resize text and read long stretches of prose on an e-reader. The device can change line breaks and page turns to fit your chosen font and screen. A technical chart or wide table may still be easier to inspect on a tablet or in the original PDF. If preserving every page exactly matters more than adjustable text, Fixed Layout keeps the PDF pages as images instead.

If the PDF is a scan, the converter first needs readable text. OCR can recognize the printed words on scanned pages, but a chart or photograph may still need to be checked against the original. For more on that trade-off, see our guide to scanned PDFs and OCR.

A quick decision guide

  • Mostly prose, selectable text: start with Standard.
  • Many formulas, tables, code blocks, or complex page order: try Pro.
  • Text cannot be selected: enable OCR for scanned pages, or choose Fixed Layout to keep the pages as images.
  • Exact visual page reproduction matters most: choose Fixed Layout and keep the source PDF handy.
