How to send an EPUB to your Kindle (the simplest way)

Last updated: 2 November 2026

The simplest way to send an EPUB to your Kindle is Amazon's free Send to Kindle web page. Sign in, drag the EPUB onto the page, pick your Kindle and send. Amazon converts the file for you and it appears in your library. You don't need to convert it yourself first.

Most of the guides we found stop at the steps. This one also covers what to try when a file doesn't arrive, and what to fix when it arrives but reads badly.

What is the simplest way to send an EPUB to Kindle?

Use Send to Kindle for Web. It needs no install, no email address and no cable. Amazon's help page says you can <a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=G5WYD9SAF7PGXRNA">upload documents of 200 MB or smaller</a> this way, and that you should keep "Add to your library" switched on so the book syncs to every device on your account.

The steps:

  • Open Amazon's Send to Kindle page (amazon.com/sendtokindle, or your country's Amazon site) and sign in to the account your Kindle uses.
  • Drag your .epub file onto the upload area, or choose it with the file picker.
  • Select the Kindle device or Kindle app that should receive it.
  • Click send. When Wi-Fi is connected, the book shows up in your library after Amazon has processed it.

Amazon converts the EPUB to its own format on its side, so the Kindle never reads the EPUB directly. <a href="https://kindlepreneur.com/epub-to-kindle/">Kindlepreneur's guide</a> describes this conversion as automatic.

Which method should you use: web, email, app or USB?

Use the web uploader for a one-off book, the phone app if the file is already on your phone, email if you like email, and USB only for special cases. All the Amazon methods work for EPUB. They differ in convenience and file-size limits.

MethodBest forNeedsSize limit
Send to Kindle for WebOne book from a computerBrowser, Amazon login200 MB per file, per Amazon
Email to your Kindle addressPeople who live in their inboxYour Send to Kindle address and an approved sender50 MB per email, per Kindlepreneur
Kindle app on iPhone/Android (share sheet)Files already on your phoneKindle app, signed inNot established in the sources we found

The 50 MB email figure comes from a third-party guide, and Amazon's own help page is the place to check current limits. The web uploader is the better choice for a large EPUB, such as an illustrated book.

How do you email an EPUB to your Kindle?

Every compatible Kindle device and Kindle app on your account has its own Send to Kindle address. Amazon's help page describes it as a unique address assigned to each one. Here is how to use it:

  • On Amazon, go to Account & Lists → Content & Devices → Preferences → Personal Document Settings. This path is from <a href="https://mdtoepub.com/send-epub-to-kindle">MDtoEPUB's walkthrough</a>, and Amazon's menus can be renamed.
  • Copy your Kindle's @kindle.com address.
  • Add the email address you'll send from to the Approved Personal Document E-mail List. Amazon ignores mail from addresses that aren't on the list.
  • Attach the EPUB to a new email and send it to your Kindle address. You don't need a subject or body.
  • If Amazon sends a verification email, click the confirm button. <a href="https://www.howtogeek.com/798894/how-to-transfer-epub-to-kindle/">How-To Geek</a> notes that you may get a "Verify Request" message the first time.

How do you send an EPUB from your phone?

The Kindle app on iPhone, iPad and Android has Send to Kindle built in. Find the EPUB in your Files app or browser downloads, open the share menu and pick the Kindle app. Then choose which device should get it and tap Send.

On iPhone and iPad, How-To Geek says you may need to turn off "Save in Kindle Library" and then select your device. That step is easy to miss. Otherwise the book goes to the app's library and not to your e-reader.

What about USB?

USB is the awkward option for EPUB. Amazon's tools convert an EPUB when it's sent over the internet, and a plain file copy skips that conversion. Sources disagree on whether newer Kindles open an EPUB copied over USB. One guide says they can, and another says the file won't work, so we can't call it established. If you want a reliable USB copy, convert the book to Kindle's AZW3 format first.

Why did my EPUB not show up on my Kindle?

Most failed sends come down to a short list of causes. Work through them in this order and you'll usually find the problem in a few minutes.

  • Wrong sender address. For email, the address you sent from must be on your approved list. Check this first.
  • Wrong Kindle address. Each device and app has its own address. An old address, or the address from another account, silently fails.
  • File too big. Stay under 200 MB for the web uploader and 50 MB for email.
  • DRM. A copy-protected EPUB from another store usually can't be converted. Amazon only handles files without that protection. If you bought the book elsewhere, check whether that store offers a DRM-free download.
  • A damaged EPUB. Open the file in another EPUB reader on your computer. If it won't open there, it won't convert at Amazon.
  • The Kindle isn't syncing. Connect to Wi-Fi, open the Kindle's home screen and use the sync option. A processed book can take a few minutes to appear.
  • Old MOBI files. Amazon moved away from MOBI. <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kindle_File_Format">Wikipedia's page on the Kindle file format</a> says Amazon announced it was replacing that support with EPUB from late 2022. Any older guide that says "convert to MOBI first" is out of date.

If a send fails and you get an email from Amazon, read it. The message often names the exact file and the reason.

Do I need to convert my EPUB before sending it?

No. Send to Kindle accepts EPUB as it is, and Amazon does the conversion. Converting first only makes sense if you want to copy a book over USB, or if the EPUB you have came from a poor source file.

Amazon's list of supported types now includes EPUB alongside PDF, DOCX, TXT, RTF, HTML and common image formats. That includes <a href="https://www.amazon.co.uk/sendtokindle">the UK Send to Kindle page</a>, which lists EPUB among the accepted types.

The sending method has no effect on how good the book is. A well-built EPUB looks good on a Kindle, and a badly built one looks bad. We run a converter, so we see this often:

  • A PDF that was turned into an EPUB badly. Chapters may be missing, page numbers may sit in the middle of sentences, and the table of contents may be absent. Our guide on fixing an EPUB with no table of contents covers that case.
  • A scanned book. If the pages are pictures, you need OCR before any EPUB will have real text. See our guide to scanned PDFs and OCR.
  • A PDF you haven't converted yet. You can send a PDF to Kindle directly. It will keep its fixed page layout, which is hard to read on a small screen. We explain why in why a PDF is hard to read on a Kindle.

So the order is: get a clean EPUB first, then send it. If the book starts as a PDF, converting it to a reflowable EPUB before sending gives you resizable text and a working contents list.

How do you get a PDF onto your Kindle as a proper EPUB?

Convert the PDF to a reflowable EPUB, check it, then send it with any of the methods above. The sending step is the same. The conversion is what decides how the book reads.

  • Upload the PDF to a converter. Convert2EPUB takes PDF, DOCX, RTF, TXT, ODT, HTML, Markdown and EPUB files up to 100 MB, according to its upload form.
  • Choose reflowable output and a target device. The converter offers options for tablet or general use, 6" e-ink, 7" e-ink and generic e-ink.
  • Turn on OCR only if the PDF is scanned with no text at all. The site notes that OCR is slow and that the result is text-only.
  • Download the EPUB and open it on your computer. Check that the chapter list works and the text reflows.
  • Send it with Send to Kindle for Web.

Our site says Send to Kindle takes an EPUB as it is, and that you only need to convert to another format to copy a book over USB. For a step-by-step conversion, see how to convert a PDF to EPUB for free. If you only want to know whether the format is worth the effort, our EPUB vs PDF comparison covers it.

If you have a PDF or document that needs to become a clean EPUB before it goes to your Kindle, Convert2EPUB can do the conversion.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Kindle open EPUB files?

Not directly, but you can send EPUB files to it. Amazon accepts EPUB through Send to Kindle and converts it to a Kindle format on its side. The book then opens like any other title in your library.

Is Send to Kindle free?

Yes. Amazon's help page says the service lets you send documents to your Kindle library on your devices and apps at no additional cost. You only need an Amazon account linked to your Kindle.

Why does Amazon say my EPUB can't be converted?

The usual reasons are DRM, a damaged file, or a file over the size limit. Test the EPUB in another reader on your computer. If it opens there, check the file size and make sure it isn't copy-protected, then try the web uploader.

Can I send several EPUBs at once?

Yes, in some cases. Kindlepreneur reports that one email can carry up to 25 attachments. You can also upload more than one file to the web uploader. Check Amazon's help page for the current limits, as they can change.

Should I send a PDF or an EPUB to my Kindle?

Send an EPUB when you want text that resizes and a working table of contents. Send a PDF only when the fixed page layout matters, such as with forms or diagrams. A text-heavy PDF is usually easier to read once it's converted to EPUB.
